This has a good mouthfilling feel, with dark plum and blackberry fruit layered with charcoal, roasted cedar and dark tobacco leaf notes. The structure is there, but it’s nicely folded in on the finish, with a smoldering iron note. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.

Has a plush, toasted edge that manages to marry with the more moderate plum and blackberry fruit. Gentle cocoa- and anise-lined finish has good weight and a velvety edge. A bit dressed up in style, but pulls it off. —J.M.

CHÂTEAU RAUZAN-SÉGLA Margaux 2013 Score: 88–91
Good flesh to the plum and cherry paste notes. Finish is relatively rounded, with a good red licorice edge. Not a ton of range but this managed to get some flesh, and delivers nice mouthfeel too. —J.M.

CHÂTEAU LABÉGORCE Margaux 2013 Score: 87–90
Good plum and raspberry notes are inlaid with an ample amount of singed balsam wood and incense. A touch firm through the finish, but there’s some charm here. —J.M.

A very perfumy, elegant style, with sandalwood, rooibos tea and bergamot notes, backed by fine, dusty structure and a lingering hint of cherry paste. The selection here was just 21 percent of the crop, and this is the smallest amount of Pavillon Rouge ever produced. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.

Tight and primal, with a taut plum pit and iron frame around a core of red currant, cherry and raspberry fruit. Flecks of white pepper line the finish, which features a long iron spine that shows impressive cut. Comes up short on flesh, but the precision is there, offering echoes of pomegranate, blood orange and bitter cherry allied to the minerality. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
